Becoming a super villian

How hard can it be to become a super-villain? Not the cheesy kinds like in the comic books, but realistic, driven attempts to take over the world. Making grand, complex and long running plans that will yield benefit in, say, 50 years. Creating a corporation that moves the directions of various seemingly disparate objects in a specific pattern so as to generate the desired effect on world economy, land prices and fuel prices - and invest accordingly. Revenue generation will be a side-effect, power being the primary focus.

What stops us? Laziness?
